It feels like an age since I sat here writing to The SheThrives community having come off a 2 week break which was just what I needed. After a holiday on the beautiful island of Lesvos were sunshine, relaxing by the pool, sipping cocktails watching sunsets and exploring the town was all that I had to do, safe to say I am recharged and raring to go!
I hope you are feeling the same and had some downtime with loved ones ❤️.
One of my passion projects this year was to increase my knowledge to serve my community and bring tools and techniques into my clinical practice that brings health benefits to my clients. With hormones, weight management and disordered eating and emotional eating being part of the daily struggles I see, I wanted to be part of the solution for the women I serve. In February I signed up to a year long course with the National Centre for Eating Disorders on their Master Practitioner Programme. For Nutritional Therapists to see eating disorders in practice, this is the only route to go but boy is it tough. It’s like a flash back to A levels with reams of paper, mind maps, binders and assessments all around me except this time I have a brain that isn’t as fast and taking me twice as long (oh to have my 18-year-old cognitive function back 😄). I am learning so much more than I could possibly imagine about the psychology of weight loss, obesity, disordered eating and soon to follow, eating disorders and already able to bring some of the tools into clinical practice with success.
One of the areas that was fascinating to research was obesity coaching and the difference between coaching for weight loss and coaching for maintenance of weight loss. The National Weight Controlled Registry (NWCR) in the USA is a selected group of 15,000 people who have successfully maintained weight loss for over 2 years, having lost over 10% of their initial starting weight. The average weight loss for this group is 66lbs. This group of 15,000 is allowing us to learn a lot about what creates success in maintaining weight loss and reduce the yo-yo dieting culture which too many succumb to and were the frustration and loss of hope falls for many.
There is no set ‘diet’ that the 15,000 adhered to. They have and continue to lose weight with different methods and diets ranging from slimming groups, personal plans, and very low-calorie diets (VLCD’s). So, the question must be asked, what is their secret?
Despite big differences in their methods of weight loss, these people are consistent in the skills they use to maintain weight loss and according to the NWCR, they have identified the formula that works for weight loss management:
1/ Planning
2/ Problem Solving
3/ Small consistent changes
4/ Having no specific weight goal
5/ Lifestyle
6/ Exercise
7/ High nutrition value foods
Applying these principles is how 15,000 people have successfully lost weight and kept it off for 2 years or more, NOT a specific diet.
If you are struggling with weight gain, weight regain, feeling overwhelmed or just can’t face another failed attempt, don’t lose faith. As a qualified Health Coach and Nutritional Therapist, I am here to help armed with the tools and techniques that work.
